VTV.vn - Powerful storm Noul packing winds of nearly 90kph slammed into central provinces of Vietnam September 18 morning, leaving at least one death and dozens injured (last update: 12.00 local time).

The storm brought down big trees and power lines on major routes, causing traffic to come grinding halt and many households to live without power.

Falling trees killed a resident and injured 23 others in Thua Thien-Hue province, local authorities said. Gusting winds tore off more than 1,600 roofs in Phong Dien, Phu Loc, A Luoi and Huong Thuy districts.

Provincial authorities mobilized forces to clear fallen trees and regulate traffic flows.

After making landfall, Noul weakened into a tropical depression and moved further inland. However, it is forecast to dump heavy rain of 200-400mm on localities.

In Quang Tri province, Noul unleashed up to 200mm of rain, flooding several communal roads in the locality. Authorities set up checkpoints in flooded areas to warn local residents about the danger of travelling.

Heavy downpours triggered flashfloods in mountainous areas, washing away a woman in Ta Rut commune, Dakrong district. Relevant forces were mobilized to search for the victim. Fortunately, her husband, who travelled with her, survived the incident.

Several airports have halted operations in anticipation of Storm Noul. In accordance with the directive issued on Thursday by the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, Chu Lai Airport (Quang Nam province), Da Nang Airport, and Phú Bài Airport (Hue) will suspend operations until 9 pm on September 18. Several airlines have set up plans to reschedule flights in response to this change.

Specifically, Vietnam Airlines will set up 22 flights to and from suspended airports to compensate for the canceled trips. Vietjet Air will also provide support for customers affected by the change by rescheduling their flights to a later time when the weather improves. Customers are also advised to keep updated with information from airlines.
